Chapter 7: Pronouns

Here we enter one of the most hotly and often debated topics in Neo-Sindarin circles: What to do about Pronouns in Sindarin.

The problem is two-fold.

First, Tolkien kept changing his mind. For example, let’s look at the “we” suffixes. The inclusive “we” suffix has been -ch,[1] -ngid, -nc, -ngir,[2] and lastly, -b.[3] Exclusive “we” was -m[4] for a long time, but he discarded it in favor of -v/-f, which we didn’t discover until Parma Eldalamberon #22.

This leads us to the second problem: we don’t have much information on how Sindarin pronouns are used. Even though we have a small mountain of “we”s - they’re all for the same two words. Most of the information comes to us scattered across many different eras, and we rarely get anything like a complete picture of what their forms were or how they were used.

The system I use is based off a chart of Common Eldarin pronouns in Vinyar Tengwar issue #49.[5] This is because when we got a glimpse of what the late-Sindarin 1st person pronoun suffixes were in Parma Eldalamberon issue #22, they showed clear evidence of being related to that chart.

But who knows? There’s so little information on Sindarin pronouns that tomorrow some new piece of Tolkien’s notes could be published that overturns my entire system, and I’ll be churning out another edition of this book to keep up with it.
